According to French newspaper L’Equipe, the competition would pit the winner of the previous season’s Champions League against three other “highly successful” European teams.
The Union of European Football Federations (UEFA) plans to organize a mini-tournament from the 2024-2025 season to be held each year in August, before the start of the Champions League, according to information obtained by the AFP agency this Tuesday from the European football body.
It is expected that in The competition pits the winner of the Champions League from the previous season against three other “very successful” European teams, assures the French newspaper L’Equipe, without specifying on what criteria they will be selected. The tournament will consist of four matches: two semi-finals, a match for third place and a final.
L’Equipe also reported that this proposal was included in the tender for the broadcasting rights of the new Champions League for the period 2024-2027. In this regard, UEFA commented to AFP that, although the idea is mentioned in said document, “nothing has been decided.”
The president of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin , had commented in May that talks were taking place to turn the European Super Cup into a four-club competition, since for now it is a single-game event, as a final, that pits the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League.
