Two Dassault Rafale fighter jets collided mid-air east Sunday at an air show in the French town of Cognac, located about 400 kilometers southwest of Paris, local media reported.

According to Colonel Nicolas Lyautey, commander of the Cognac-Chateaubernard air base, the aircraft “touched each other in flight” and one of them “lost a piece of its wing , which during its fall damaged the roof of a house”. However, he remarked that the fighters landed “without difficulty” and “no injuries are to be regretted”; He added that a technical investigation of the incident is being carried out.

Witnesses stated that the incident caused “great damage to homes in the town of Gensac-la-Pallue” and that “it looked like a gunshot, there was dust everywhere”. “I don't know if we can say that there was more fear than harm because this episode is not insignificant”, affirmed a resident.

“I was having lunch when it happened. I saw the piece on the ground from a distance, there were a lot of police around, but a neighbor sent us a photo. Fortunately, the occupant of the house was not in it at the time!”, detailed a neighbor of the street where the debris fell. It is “a piece of approximately one meter by 40 centimeters”, he specified.
