They confirm the authenticity of the first images of a strange bioluminous phenomenon known as 'milky sea'

The photos were taken in 2019 by the crew of a yacht sailing off the coast of Indonesia.

The photographs taken by the crew of the Ganesha, a private yacht, of a rare bioluminescent phenomenon that occurred off the coast of the island of Java, Indonesia, correspond to the first known images of a legendary event reported for centuries by sailors known as ‘milky sea’, according to an article published this Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

According to Steven Miller, author of the publication, the “milky seas”, unlike the bioluminescence of plankton that can be seen on some coasts, they are massive oceanic swaths that shine evenly and constantly at night. It is believed that the glow is caused by luminous bacteria, although the details of its composition, structure, as well as the factors that cause it and the implications it has in the environment remain unknown.

According to the article, between the end of July and the beginning of September 2019, specialized NASA satellites detected a possible ‘milky sea’ that extended for about 100,000 square kilometers in the Indian Ocean. By comparing the Ganesha’s trajectory with the agency’s images, they were able to corroborate that the photos taken on deck corresponded to the phenomenon described.
