The vertical 'nap boxes' with which Japanese companies intend to solve the problem of their employees' overwork

Japanese company Koyoju Gohan will design a ‘nap box’ to help have a healthier office culture in the country. The solution is proposed in conjunction with Itoki Corp., a Tokyo-based furniture specialist. Both signed a license agreement this Thursday, whose objective is to end the health problems suffered by Japanese employees, largely due to infinite working hours, reports Bloomberg.

According to Saeko Kawashima, director of communications at Itoki, there are many people who “lock themselves in the bathroom for a while” to rest. Kawashima thinks that’s not healthy, since it’s “better to sleep in a comfortable place.” While much research indicates that the restorative rest of the nap increases productivity, this new device can encourage employees to take short breaks.

The capsule is designed so that the user sleeps standing up, like a flamingo. The initial design will ensure that the head, knees and rear are comfortably supported so that the person does not fall. However, the price and availability have not been decided yet.

“I think many Japanese people tend to work continuously without breaks […] We hope that companies can use this as a more flexible approach to rest,” Kawashima said.
