In his formal accusation, the judicial entity also requested the payment of a fine of 23 million euros (about 24 million dollars).

This Wednesday, the artist rejected the agreement proposed by the Barcelona Prosecutor’s Office to avoid going to trial for the six crimes of fraud against the Spanish Treasury of which she is accused. The proposal included the reduction of the sentence so that she would not go to prison if she was found guilty, the acceptance of the accusations and the payment of a fine.

The public ministry maintains that Shakira pretended not to reside in Spain in order not to pay taxes and hid her income through a network based in tax havens. In this regard, the Colombian star has reiterated her innocence, arguing that during the three years her stay in the Iberian country was sporadic. At the same time, he maintains that his conduct has always been impeccable and has shown a good disposition, since he has returned the 14.5 million that the Tax Agency demanded, as well as 3 million in interest.

The presentation of the indictment means that the court of the municipality of Esplugues de Llobregat issues an order to open an oral trial in the coming weeks. In that case, at the request of the prosecutor in charge, Shakira and a total of 37 witnesses will be questioned. Although a last-minute pact is not ruled out, it is expected that, even so, the singer would have to sit on the defendant’s bench.
