Taiwan conducts live-fire drill amid rising tension with China (VIDEO)

The purpose of the exercise was to test the ability of the troops to repel an alleged attack on the island by Chinese warships and planes.

The Taiwanese Army carried out a live-fire military drill this Wednesday in the sea off the Pescadores Islands amid growing tension with China.

The same had the objective of verifying the ability of the troops to repel an alleged attack by Chinese ships and warplanes on the island, according to local media.

M2022 tanks participated in the monthly exercise A3, armored personnel carriers CM21, caliber howitzers 155 mm and 105, as well as mortars and machine guns. However, due to bad weather no targets were placed in the sea for the tanks to fire on.

Meanwhile, US congressmen have expressed their willingness to strengthen Taiwan’s defense last week and say they are willing to approve additional billions of dollars in military aid for Taipei.

Tensions between Beijing and Washington over Taiwan intensified after the visit to Taipei by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, last August. In response, China launched a series of “unprecedented” large-scale military exercises and training activities, including live-fire drills, in sea and air space in six zones around the island.
