More than 40 people are found dead in the back of a truck in Texas, on the border with Mexico

This could be the deadliest tragedy to take place during an attempt to cross the US border from Mexico in decades.

More of 40 bodies have been found this Monday inside a tractor-trailer near the Lackland Air Force Base in the city of San Antonio, state of Texas, USA , located near the border with Mexico. Likewise, another 16 people have been found alive and transferred to hospitals in the area, police sources reported.

A local official who spoke on condition of anonymity pointed out that it was believed that the people who were in the trailer were migrants and that the case could be a suspected cross-border smuggling attempt. In this context, it could be the deadliest tragedy that takes place during an attempt to cross the United States border United from Mexico in recent decades, collects AP.

“Immigrants seeking asylum should always be treated as a crisis humanitarian, but tonight we face a terrible human tragedy”, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg wrote in a tweet. “More than 40 hopeful lives were lost. I urge you to think with compassion, pray for the deceased, the sick and their families at this time,” he added.

For his part, Gustavo Garcia-Siller, the Roman Catholic Archbishop of San Antonio, noted that “once again, the lack of courage to confront immigration reform is killing and destroying lives.” “ We don’t learn” , he expressed in his message.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus reported that the authorities received an alert from a worker in the area where the truck was found, who had heard a cry for help and went to investigate its origin. Meanwhile, the city’s fire chief, Charles Hood, said he had “high hopes” that the 16 people hospitalized will survive.

All of them suffered the effects of high temperatures , which that day were close to 37 degrees Celsius in San Antonio, added to the fact that inside the truck there was no water and “no visible air conditioning unit in operation on that platform”.

In turn, the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, blamed the tragedy on US President Joe Biden. “At least 42 people were found dead inside a truck transporting migrants in Texas. These deaths are Biden’s fault . They are the result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law,” Abbott said.
