During his visit to the Senate for the ‘Belisario Domínguez’ award ceremony, the president of the Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico, Arturo Zaldívar, was criticized by the legislator of the conservative National Action party Martha Márquez for his position in favor of abortion.
The senator appeared in Congress last Tuesday with a banner that read: “If your mother had an abortion, you would not be president.”
Hours later, through his social networks, Zaldívar commented that his motherhood had been desired, and added: “If it hadn’t been like that, I hope that at that time she would have been able to exercise her reproductive rights. All rights for all women,” she defended.

The lawyer maintains an open position in favor of the legal interruption of pregnancy, promoting from the Court measures to decriminalize the act.
In September 2022, the Court issued a ruling in favor of abortion, accumulating the necessary jurisprudence to decriminalize abortion throughout the country.
“The crime of abortion punishes poverty and reduces women to an instrument of reproduction; the sentence to prison, stigma, and in many cases death,” said the minister after the resolution.
Despite the fact that the legal measure prevents a woman from being imprisoned for interrupting her pregnancy, it is still necessary for the penal codes of the states of the country to change the local regulation and issue new provisions to allow free and safe abortion.
In Mexico only 13 states have reformed their laws to guarantee the right to abortion without any other limitation other than the weeks of gestation, being Baja California, in the north of the country, the last entity to do so in June 2022.
