France deploys the Mamba anti-missile system in Romania as part of the “reinforcement of OTAN deterrent and defensive posture on the eastern flank”

Along with the Mamba system, the French Armed Forces have set up a 3D Defense Management Center (CMD3D), which allows control of the surface-to-air anti-missile system.

France announced this Thursday through a statement, quoted by national media, that his country has deployed a state-of-the-art anti-missile system SAMP/T, known among French troops as Mamba, in Romanian territory, where OTAN forces are currently stationed .

“Implemented by a hundred airmen, the medium-range surface-to-air system Mamba […] can provide a bubble of protection for the benefit of the forces operating in the area,” said the French General Staff, adding that this system is connected via a tactical data link to both the Romanian and OTAN defense systems, with the purpose of “satisfying the Integrated Air and Anti-Missile Defense (IAMD) needs” of the military alliance.

Furthermore, he commented that this deployment “demonstrates France’s capacity and will to protect its interests and those of its allies in Europe and reinforces the strategic partnership that unites Romania since 2007, in particular in the field of ground-air defense”.

The spokesman for the General Staff, Pascal Ianni, explained that this is the “first mission” of the Mamba system, which “is intended above all to protect the NATO air base”, where they are housed several thousand soldiers.

Together with the Mamba system, the French Armed Forces have set up a 3D Defense Management Center (CMD3D ), which makes it possible to control the surface-to-air anti-missile system.

For its part, the Romanian Ministry of Defense stated in a statement that “France will deploy a air defense detachment at the Capu Midia National Air Defense Training Center”.

About 500 French soldiers are in Romanian territory

France sent an emergency contingent of 500 soldiers to Romania on February 26, which has been made permanent since that date, alternating with the Belgian and Dutch Army . According to the French General Staff, this group of soldiers “is one of the four additional battalions deployed by NATO on the eastern flank of Europe” together with Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria.

He also stressed that this deployment is “the reinforcement of NATO’s deterrent and defensive posture on the eastern flank of Europe” and concluded: “We have never been so committed to NATO missions and on the eastern flank of Europe”.
