“A dozen countries have 2.0 Leopard 2 tanks,” Andrei Melnik argued, calling for part of these armored vehicles to be delivered to kyiv.
The controversial former Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andréi Mélnik, has proposed creating a “European tank alliance” to support kyiv in its fight against Russian troops, urging European countries to hand over tanks “as soon as possible”. Leopard 2 tanks and Marder infantry fighting vehicles, along with more artillery and ammunition.
“A dozen countries have 2.0000 Leopard 2 tanks,” Mélnik said in an interview with Welt am Sonntag. “If each of these countries yields around the 10 % of that to Ukraine, we can form a whole army of 200 or more tanks to liberate Ukrainian territories controlled by Russia faster,” he added.
Mélnik stressed that now kyiv needs “everything that can be delivered quickly and as soon as possible” . “Leopard 2 and Marder tanks, more artillery, but also ammunition. That is the top priority
After eight years of serving as the ambassador in Berlin, Mélnik, known for his recent controversial statements, ended diplomatic activities this Saturday.
Until now, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has refused to deliver tanks to Ukraine, arguing that Berlin should not go it alone and does not want to take the first step towards escalating the armed conflict. At the end of September, Scholz declared that Germany supports Ukraine “in a way that is not escalating into a war between Russia and NATO, because it would be a catastrophe.”
