The Chinese president reiterated his country’s commitment to progress in the process of peaceful reunification with Taiwan, without completely ruling out the possibility of the use of force.

China has made the decision to seize Taiwan in a “much faster time frame” than previously thought, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Monday.

“There has been a change in Beijing’s approach to Taiwan in recent years,” Blinken said at an event at Stanford University in California. China has made the “fundamental decision that the status quo is no longer acceptable,” and is “determined to achieve reunification in a much faster timeframe,” he added, without citing timelines or giving other details.

The statements by the head of US diplomacy come after Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated last Sunday, during his opening speech at the XX Congress of the Communist Party (PCC), his country’s commitment to advancing in the process of peaceful reunification with Taiwan, without completely ruling out the possibility of the use of force.

“We will continue to fight for peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and maximum effort, but we will never promise to give up the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary measures,” Xi stressed, stressing that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter of Beijing that must be resolved by the Chinese people.
