“It is not common to find this type of dual commemorative stelae, with relief on both sides in situ, that is, where the ancient Mayans placed them,” said Diego Prieto, director of INAH.
The director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) of Mexico, Diego Prieto, revealed that a commemorative figure of the Mayan culture was found in the sunken patio of the archaeological zone of Uxmal, in the southern state of Yucatan .
The stele, carved on both sides, shows on one of its sides a female deity with large eyes, feathers at the corners of the mouth and bare chest. The woman holds a quetzal bird in her left hand and wears a pectoral with two rows of pearls.
“The theme of the big eyes can be linked to an
identity of death,” explained Prieto at the Thursday morning conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The other side of the monument reveals a male deity , who wears on top a large wide-brimmed hat with feathers and an owl’s head, while in his left hand he holds a cane and in his right, a lump Her legs are bandaged and she wears an ornate cape.
The deity is a frequent representation in the Mayan Puuc and Chenes styles, classics of the Uxmal culture, the official said.
“This interesting archaeological find pleases us very much, because it is not common to find this type of dual commemorative stelae, that is, with relief on both sides in situ, that is, where the ancient Mayans placed them,” celebrated the director.
