American Basketball Player Arrested in Russia Pleads Guilty to Smuggling Cannabis Oil

The athlete faces a sentence of between 5 and 10 years in prison.

American basketball player Brittney Griner, detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport On February 17 in possession of drugs, she pleaded guilty this Thursday to smuggling hashish oil, but, according to the TASS agency, the athlete assured that she had no intention of committing any crime.

The athlete had arrived from New York and, while passing through the green corridor of the airport, her luggage caught the attention of a police service dog.

At her first hearing, last Friday, Griner was informed of the charges against her: she is accused of deliberately introducing drugs into the country. The Russian Foreign Ministry notified Wednesday that the WNBA star will be able to appeal her sentence or ask for clemency once the verdict is handed down.

Greiner faces a sentence of between 5 and 10 years in prison. His next court appearance will take place on July 14.

Biden is “working” to get him released

US President Joe Biden telephoned Griner’s wife and assured her that he is “working to get his release from Brittney ASAP.” The president described as “ intolerable ” the detention of the athlete.

In the middle of the call, in which the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, also participated, Biden ordered his team to maintain regular contact with Griner’s family and those of other Americans detained abroad .
