Founded in 1990, iRobot is currently one of the most important companies in the home automation sector in the world.
Amazon revealed in a statement published this Friday that it has agreed to buy the private American corporation iRobot, manufacturer of the popular Roomba vacuum cleaner robots, for 1,700 million dollars.
iRobot was founded in 1990 and is currently one of the most important companies in the home automation sector in the world. Although much of its products were already sold on Amazon, this strategic move would allow for larger-scale production and full integration into international trade chains.
“For many years, the iRobot team has demonstrated its ability to reinvent the way people clean with products that are incredibly convenient and ingenious,” said Dave Limp, vice president of Amazon Devices. “Customers love these products and I’m excited to work with the iRobot team to invent ways to make customers’ lives easier and more enjoyable.”
For his part, Colin Angle, president, and CEO of iRobot stressed that Amazon shares the “passion for creating well thought out innovations that allow people to do more at home”, which is why he is “excited” to join the ranks of the e-commerce giant.
Until the purchase agreement is completed, Angle will continue to hold his position within the company and the company will continue to operate independently.
