A trial begins against Neymar that foresees up to 5 years in prison

In addition to the player, his parents and the former presidents of Barcelona, Josep Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, are accused of fraud.

This Monday will begin in Spain the trial against Neymar for an alleged fraud committed in 2013, during his transfer from the Santos club to Barcelona. If found guilty, the Brazilian star could face up to five years in prison.

In addition to the player, among others accused of corruption, bribery and fraud, are his parents, both clubs, the former presidents of Barcelona Josep Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, as well as the former president of Santos Odilio Rodrigues.

On the first day of hearings, reports the Europa Press agency, witnesses between which stand out Javier Faus, former director of the Spanish club in 2013, and Andoni Zubizarreta, former sports director; while Florentino Pérez, president of Real Madrid, will do the same tomorrow.

For his part, the footballer is expected to testify at the hearing in Barcelona next Friday , 40 October.

Reasons for lawsuit

The case dates back to a complaint by the Brazilian investment company DIS, which owned the 21 % of Neymar’s rights when he played for Santos. The firm maintains that it did not receive the part that corresponded to it for the transfer because the real value of the operation was underestimated.

Officially, Barcelona valued the signing of Neymar in 57,1 million euros: 40 million for the athlete’s family and 10,1 to be distributed between the Brazilian team and the DIS group. However, the Spanish Justice estimated that the final amount of the agreement is at least 80 million euros.

Sentences of up to 5 years in prison

The Prosecutor’s Office has requested that Neymar be sentenced to two years in prison and five years for Rosell, who was then president of the club, and a fine for 10 million euros, equal to the requested from the footballer’s father.

For its part, the Dis group demands, against the striker and his parents, a sentence to five years in prison and a fine of 159 millions; in addition to the disqualification as a professional player and as representatives of athletes, respectively.
