A drone just broke its own record for the longest unmanned flight in history

Published:

The Zephyr S HAPS is a stratospheric flight aircraft from the Airbus company that works with solar energy.

The Zephyr S drone has been flying continuously for 26 days, breaking his own previous record of 25 days, 23 hours and 57 minutes, set in 2018. The information appeared on July 11 on the Twitter account of the global flight tracking service Flightradar24. The drone took off June 15 from the Army Test Range in Yuma, Arizona, and according to The Drive the first ten days it flew over the Yuma area and an adjacent wildlife refuge. However, on June 25, it left that area to head south and flew parallel to the southern US border towards the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea until arriving in Belize four days later. After spending a few days over the airspace of that country, he headed back to the US

The Previous mark, which was registered in the Guinness Book of World Records, was set by the same aircraft on a flight over Arizona between July 11 and August 5, 2018 . The Zephyr S HAPS (High Altitude Pseudo-Satellite) is a solar-powered stratospheric aircraft. It is designed to carry a payload of 24 kilos, which allows it to transport equipment for military applications, provide emergency communications or perform environmental monitoring.

Its manufacturer, Airbus, specifies that the Zephyr S is a super light drone (less than 75 kg) with a wingspan of 25 meters . It works exclusively with solar electric energy provided by solar panels integrated into its wings and tail. It uses secondary batteries that are charged during the day to power its two small, energy-efficient electric motors during night flights. It is capable of flying extremely high in the atmosphere to avoid commercial air traffic and adverse weather conditions.
