The child’s mother is in critical condition and the circumstances surrounding the incident that occurred in a nature reserve are being investigated.
A baby of 16 months died and her mother , aged 25 years old, was seriously injured after being trampled by a giraffe this Wednesday in the Kuleni Game Park nature reserve (KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa), reported the news portal News24.
“The girl was taken to the nearest doctor’s office, where she died. The mother was rushed to the hospital to receive medical care. It is reported who is in critical condition. The details surrounding the incident remain unclear,” police spokesman Nqobile Gwala told the media.
The victims were occupying one of the luxury cabins offered to visitors by the Kuleni Game Park, which is promoted as a great place to enjoy close encounters with animals, while walking or cycling along numerous trails.
The motives for the attack are unknown. Although giraffes are not usually aggressive, females may attack to protect their young.
